QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK A LOT
What is People First of CT? People First of CT is a volunteer group of self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities. People First of CT advocates that ALL people – with and without disabilities – are treated with equity. Everyone must be respected for their strengths.
Members of People First are passionate advocates and fight for the right to be respected for their abilities and make individual lives better. People First advocates for choice, independence, freedom, respect and dignity for everyone. People First advocates that ALL people must have equal access to community living, self-determination, work, and inclusion in all aspects of their lives.
Why should I come to this conference? Come to learn, meet other people, see old friends, and come for fun!
What kinds of things can I learn about? There will be people speaking about Human Rights and Advocacy, Community Housing, Employment, Friends and Relationships, Resources, Health and Safety, and more!
Will there be food there? YES! There will be a continental breakfast. There will be a boxed lunch for each person. There will be snacks. There will be ice water and other things to drink.
How much does it cost to go to the conference? $25 for each self-advocate and each staff member, parents or friends, and allies. This covers the cost of food and things to support the conference. There are a limited number of scholarships available through TASH/NE. Contact drlinda2007@gmail.com for information.
How can I get there? If you get services from a provider agency, ask them to take you and other people they support. They will need to use an agency car or van and pay a staff driver. If you can drive yourself, there will be parking. You can ask you parents or friends to drive you. Or you may be able to take public transportation. Self-Advocates may be able to rent a van as a group, too.
Is there a dance at the end of the day? YES! The dance is from 3 to 5 p.m. The Deejay is Josh Mears, Vice President of People First of CT.
