What does People First of Connecticut do?

ADVOCACY

 

People First of Connecticut:

  • Helps individuals develop self-advocacy skills.

  • Helps groups of self-advocates fight for what they need in their communities.

  • Advocates for statewide changes to make people’s lives better

  • Educates individuals with disabilities, their families and friends, members of their communities, employers, elected officials, and others about the rights of people with disabilities.

ACTIVITIES

 

People First of Connecticut:

  • Meets regularly so everyone knows what current issues are.

  • Sponsors, hosts, and participates in events, conferences, and activities that promote the rights and abilities of individuals with disabilities.

  • Produces things like letters and videos to raise awareness about things that are important for people with disabilities.

  • Agrees on talking points each year for state and local officials like the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, legislators, and mayors or local community board members.

  • Develops an annual plan to address 3-5 very important issues.

  • Forms committees to work on special projects.

  • Keeps records needed by the Fiscal Sponsor.
